Rami Malek is officially an Academy Award front-runner. The Oscars 2019 nominations are finally in and Egyptian-American actor, Rami Malek – amongst many A-list actors such as Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale – is officially up for a nomination for his performance as the legendary, Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody in this year’s 91st Academy Awards which will take place on Sunday February 24th 2019.
“I guess there are words you just don’t expect hearing in your life and one is that you’ve been nominated for an Oscar. It’s an emotional moment.”
-Rami Malek, Nominee, Best Actor for Bohemian Rhapsody
Malek tweeted about his excitement a few hours after it was announced.
“Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the work of so many from the vast and crew who made all of this possible,” the Tweet stated. “I have absolutely treasured playing Freddie Mercury and I am so profoundly humbled and thrilled to honor him this way”
The film narrates the story of Queen’s front man, Freddie Mercury, portrayed by Rami Malek, and the band’s road to fame. The film won the award for Best Motion Picture, and Malek also scooped the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama at the 76th Golden Globe Awards earlier this month.
“I am beyond moved… Thank you to Freddie Mercury for giving me the joy of a lifetime,” Malek said when he accepted the award, also thanking and dedicating his win to Freddie Mercury, adding: “I love you, you beautiful man .This is for and because of you, gorgeous.”
There are many reasons why Rami Malek can win the Oscar for Bohemian Rhapsody. We are not saying that just because he’s half Egyptian and we are rooting for him to win, rather because he actually has a very strong chance of winning.
- Portrayal of a Real Life Person
Rami Malek portrays a real life legend and this definitely ensures the Academy’s attention. Also, this is one of the toughest jobs for an actor to play a real life character in a biopic. When the character is fictional, the actor has a chance to be creative when it comes to the character’s manners. However, when the character is based on a real life person, the actor is restricted to how the character was and has to fit the role and be true to who this person was and Rami Malek definitely nailed it.
- Complete Physical Transformation
Malek physically transformed onscreen completely that even Queen guitarist, Brian May, praised Malek’s performance by saying, “He inhabited Freddie to the point where we even started to think of him as Freddie. Really remarkable.” Physical alterations alone – aside from how brilliantly he nailed the role – can win him the Oscar judging from some previous Oscar winners’ performances such as Adrien Brody in “The Pianist”, Jamie Fox in “Ray”, Reese Witherspoon in “Walk the Line”, Marion Cotillard in “La Vie en Rose”, Meryl Streep in “The Iron Lady,” Daniel Day-Lewis in “Lincoln” and the list goes on.
- “Bohemian Rhapsody” is a Box Office Hit
“Bohemian Rhapsody” definitely took both the world and the box office by storm. In total, the movie took over five Oscar nominations not so long after it broke records by making an impressive $800 million worldwide at the box office – making this the highest-grossing music biopic in history. The film is also nominated for best picture, best actor (Malek), best editing, best sound editing, and best sound mixing.
- Rami Malek Won a Golden Globe Award
While this is a good indicator and a milestone in Malek’s career, it can swing both ways because sadly winning the Golden Globe Award does not guarantee winning an Oscar. Fellow Egyptian legend, Omar Al Sharif, won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in “Lawrence of Arabia”, but lost the Oscar to Ed Begley at the 35th Academy Awards in 1963. On the other hand, he could win the SAG Awards and the BAFTA as well and that would increase his chances.
- Rami Malek’s First Oscar Nomination
This is Rami Malek’s first ever Academy Award nomination and this could be his good luck charm since all his fellow nominees have been nominated before. Each year, there is some actors who have been repeatedly nominated and lost to one-time nominee actors such as Leonardo Dicaprio (until he finally won Best Actor in a leading role in “The Revenant”), Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, and the list goes on. There are also one-hit Oscar wonders who have swooped the Best Actor Academy Award with their first nomination such as Jennifer Hudson in “Dream Girls”, Cuba Gooding Jr. in “Jerry Maguire” and Adrien Brody in “The Pianist”. Could Rami Malek be one of them?
While these are all compelling reasons to grant Rami Malek an Academy Award, could he in fact be this year’s Oscar’s man of the hour? Is this a real prediction or is it too farfetched? What are your thoughts? Do you think Rami Malek will win Best Actor in this year’s Oscars? Tell us in comments!
